caesarean birth (c-section)

A caesarean birth, commonly referred to as a c-section, is an alternative for birthing a child when vaginal delivery may not be the safest delivery method. This is performed by a doctor through a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus. C-Sections may be performed when a baby is breached, there is a placenta previa, fetal distress or other maternal or fetal complications.

how the process works

Typically, the caesarean birth begins with bloodwork to ensure that they may prescribe proper medications and treatments. You will be given medications that will help to neutralise the acid in your stomach and be hooked to an IV. You will also have part of your pubic hair shaved to prepare for the procedure. After you are administered anesthesia, you will have the surgery. The usual time for c-section is about 10 minutes from the first incision to the birth of your child.

The recovery of a c-section is usually longer than that of vaginal birth. Your incision will be sore and most women experience pain when walking for the first few times after the surgery. You will be administered medications to help with the pain. After a few days, your staples and/or stitches will be removed.
