A glucose tolerance test (GCT) is usually administered between 24 and 28 weeks of the pregnancy to check for
gestational diabetes. Between 2 and 5 percent of women develop gestational diabetes. When you arrive for your GCT, you are given a sugar solution that contains 50 grams of glucose which tastes similar to a flavored soda. You must ingest the solution within 5 minutes. One hour later, your physician or a technician will take a blood sample from your arm to check for blood sugar levels. Results are typically available in a few days.
