Group B Streptococcous (GBS) is a type of bacterial infection that may be found in a pregnant woman's rectum or vagina and can pass on to the baby during pregnancy. group B strep testing Women are typically tested for group B strep indection between week 35 and 38. The test involves a swab of both the vagina and rectum and the swab is sent to a lab for analysis. Results are usually delivered with 24 to 48 hours.
If you test positive for GBS, your physician usually administers an antibiotic through the IV during pregnancy to prevent passing it on to your baby during birth.
