amniocentesis testing

Amniocentesis is a procedure performed during pregnancy to check for chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections by taking a sample of your amniotic fluid. This procedure is usually performed between the 16th and 20th week and typically administered to women who have an increased risk of genetic and chromosomal problems.

Before having an AMNIO, you will begin with an ultrsound that measures your baby and to check the basic anatomy. The ultrasound is also used to pinpoint an area of amniotic fluid that is a safe distance from the baby and the placenta. Under continuous ultrasound monitoring, the physician then inserts a long hollow needle through the abdominal wall and into the pinpointed sac of fluid. Aproximately one ounce of fluid will be extracted over a period of a few minutes but usually lasts about 30 seconds. The amount of pain and discomfort varies with each women with some experiencing cramping, pinching or pressure. You may choose to have your abdomen numbed with a local anesthetic if you prefer.

While this is an invasive surgery, the risk of coming into contact with the baby is very rare if under constant monitoring of the ultrasound. Your doctor will avoid placing the needle near the baby. If your baby does come into contact, they have the reflexes to quickly move away from the needle just as we would.
